A circle of people gathered around a fire under the redwoods at dusk

The Circle

Add something to the fire.

Somewhere to set down a thought, a reflection, or a note from wherever you happen to be reading. It comes straight to me.

Why this page exists

A fire is not an audience.

If you'd like somewhere to start

  • 01The line that stopped you — and why it stopped you.
  • 02Something you are carrying right now.
  • 03Where you're reading from, and what the land looks like there.
  • 04A question you'd ask if we were sitting down.

At a council fire nobody performs. People arrive carrying something, they set it down in the middle where everyone can see it, and the fire is bigger for it. Then somebody else speaks.

That is what this is. Not a mailing list. Not a comment section. A place to say the thing the book brought up, or the thing you have been carrying this week, or simply where you are and what the weather is doing there.

I read every one of them. I answer more of them than you would expect.

Elders and young people seated together in a circle outdoors, listening

This is the room the page is imitating. Everyone facing in. Nobody at the front.

Add someone to the fire — it opens your own mail, addressed to me. I read everything.

It's on the fire.

Thank you for that. It landed in my inbox exactly as you wrote it, and I'll read it myself.

If you left an address, don't be surprised to hear back.

Three generations walking the red rock above a canyon at first light

Someone kept the fire before you got here. That is the only reason there is one.
